Update on giraffe calf
The young male giraffe born in Magdeburger Zoo on 1st June can be seen in the giraffe house or in its outside enclosure area. Giraffe calves which are hand-raised usually drink between 6 to 9 litres of specially prepared milk a day. At present, the daily milk intake of the giraffe varies from ‚too little’ to ‚normal’, so that veterinary medicine is required. The young giraffe is 185 cm tall and weighs around 65 kg. Although it is not one of the tallest or heaviest giraffes, a continual growth is visible. In order to increase its mobility, the young giraffe is taken on dailly walks accompanied by a zoo keeper. With the nice summer weather, it can continue to explore its outside surroundings.
